Sonnet for a Saturday, The Distances, Second Series (from The Songs Of The Erinnyes, Sonnets, Odes, and Elegies by Jay Noya, Brigantium Press)

Sonnet for a Saturday

I cannot admit that I’m lost and that the road is unfamiliar
Because I do recognize its ditches and stretches and the clusters
Of trees in the distance and the oblong of blue above them
Everything about me is subdued by a shell-like melancholy
That belongs to my heart because it aches
In the way that it does when I grope in the dark
For what I have squandered and lost and shall not again regain
Except that I defy and curse the unforgiving sea of fire that is my fate
And in so doing I lift my gaze to the heavens and beyond
And I do so because the sun bids me to seek faith and bless
What fills the sandy expanse that is the goodly and godly firmament
And it falls to you to grant me the cure to my love and my sadness
