Sonnet 1, The Distances, Second Series (from The Songs Of The Erinnyes, Sonnets, Odes, and Elegies by Jay Noya, Brigantium Press)

Sonnet 1

If on the rarest of occasions I should appear before you as a shadow
Wafted on the invisible beating wings of a seascented wind
It’s because since I’ve found you and twirled like a top and kissed you
I can’t abide the shaking and commotion of any thumping silence
Belonging to what clouds arrive with the pinks of the dawn
And are scattered and gone behind the blackened gaps of trees
And have dispersed and streaked across rising and falling walls
When they’re not anonymous chestnut trees in Manhattan's boulevards
It can be rather sudden and single out a Sunday’s end in August
When without a word I quit and retreat like a passing shower
Feeling exiled in your gull eyes (wheeling over the Hudson)
It’s because the distances in your cloudy eyes are what mitigate my love
